Full Version: Recommendation for 2-bay NAS

Hi,
I try to save all of my research data on my laptop so I do not need to depend on external storage methods that become obsolete (zip drives, CDs, DVDs). However, I am approaching 1TB of data and filling up my laptop drive. I have a cloud back up service but I would also like to have automatic local back up and storage. Instead of getting a bigger flash drive to manually back up to, I think a NAS would be a good option. To keep up with my ever-growing data, I think 2 or 3TB would be sufficient for a few years. I like the idea of a 2 bay NAS with SSD to keep energy consumption low and the drives mirroring each other. I do not have a lot of experience handling drives so I would like a set up that is easy to install. I would probably be the only user for the foreseeable future. I have one primary laptop but another older one in case of any trouble with the primary. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks,

After considering your requirements, I recommend the Synology DS224+ for your needs. Here's why:

User-Friendly Setup: Synology NAS devices are known for their intuitive interface and straightforward setup process. The DS224+ offers a hassle-free installation experience, ideal for users with limited experience handling drives.

Automatic Backup: With the DS224+, you can effortlessly set up automatic local backups of your laptop's data. Its two-bay configuration allows for RAID mirroring (RAID 1), ensuring that your data remains secure in the event of a drive failure.

Energy Efficiency: The DS224+ is designed to be energy-efficient, and you have the flexibility to install SSDs for even lower power consumption. This aligns with your preference for SSDs to keep energy usage at a minimum.

Capacity: While the DS224+ doesn't come with pre-installed drives, you can customize it with two 2TB or 3TB SSDs to meet your storage needs for the next few years.

Solo User: As the sole user for now, the DS224+ is perfectly suited to your requirements. It can effectively handle data storage and backup tasks without unnecessary complexity.
