I have a mini pc I'll use as a Plex server, and now I need a storage layer of some sort. So, I decided to go for a NAS. Quicksync is not a must, since I already have that in my mini pc. I also want to store personal files, like photos and videos. I prioritize low power usage and easiness of use at the lowest possible price. 10GBE (or 2.5GBE) is a nice to have, and could be added later. I've been looking at Synology DS923+ and QNAP TS-464. Of the two, Synology seems more suited, due to its software. I'm wondering if I can get something cheaper at the expense of processing power, or other. I don't mind the DIY route, although I'd skip countless hours of configuration, and appreciate what Synology (or QNAP) provide out of the box. Thanks!
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out! Considering your budget and requirements, the Synology DS923+ seems like a solid choice for your home NAS setup. It's user-friendly, energy-efficient, and can handle both local and remote streaming effectively. The DS923+ packs a punch with its AMD Ryzen R1600 processor, ensuring smooth operations for your Plex server and personal file storage needs. If you're open to exploring alternatives, you might also want to check out the Asustor NAS AS5404T, which offers a similar Intel Celeron N5105 processor and 4GB DDR4 RAM. Both options are well-suited for multimedia storage and come with the potential for future expansion.
